Waterproof Transformer for Pool Lighting

Project Background

A pool-lighting equipment supplier required a reliable transformer for an outdoor installation exposed to high humidity, condensation, rain and occasional water splashes. The transformer needed to convert a 230V AC mains supply into an isolated 24V AC output for low-voltage pool lights while fitting within a project-specific installation enclosure.

The Challenge

Standard open-frame transformers were unsuitable because moisture could reach the windings, terminals and internal insulation. Long-term exposure to humid outdoor conditions could lead to insulation deterioration, corrosion, leakage current or premature failure.

The project therefore required:

  • 230V AC input and isolated 24V AC output

  • Reliable operation in humid outdoor conditions

  • Protection against moisture and condensation

  • Sealed and mechanically secure cable exits

  • An enclosure adapted to the customer’s installation space

  • Stable output under the specified lighting load

  • Controlled temperature rise during continuous operation

ECKO’s Solution

ECKO developed a customized, fully encapsulated waterproof transformer based on the customer’s electrical, mechanical and environmental requirements.

The windings and internal connections were completely encapsulated with insulating resin. This reduced the possibility of moisture entering the transformer and provided additional mechanical protection against vibration and environmental exposure.

Sealed cable exits were incorporated into the enclosure to help prevent water from entering through the lead-wire connection points. The cable type, length, colour and termination method were also customized according to the customer’s wiring system.

A project-specific enclosure was designed to match the available installation space and mounting arrangement. During the design stage, ECKO reviewed the transformer dimensions, resin volume and heat-dissipation path to maintain an acceptable temperature rise at the required load.

Testing and Verification

Before shipment, the transformers were inspected and tested according to the approved specification. The testing process included:

  • Input and output voltage verification

  • No-load current measurement

  • Rated-load performance testing

  • Insulation resistance testing

  • Dielectric withstand testing

  • Temperature-rise testing

  • Visual inspection of the resin encapsulation

  • Cable-exit sealing and mechanical inspection

Where a specific IP rating is required, the enclosure, cable-entry structure and installation method must be defined and verified according to the agreed project requirements.

Project Result

The completed transformer provided stable 24V AC power for the pool-lighting system while improving protection against humidity, condensation and outdoor exposure. Its customized enclosure allowed straightforward integration into the customer’s equipment, while the sealed leads and full encapsulation supported more reliable long-term operation.

The customer received a transformer solution tailored to the actual load, installation space and environmental conditions, rather than a general-purpose transformer requiring additional modification.
